Exterior Painting

Here are some steps towards properly painting an exterior.

Materials:

  • exterior flat/eggshell paint
  • exterior semi-gloss paint
  • paint sprayer
  • paint brush
  • ladder
  • paint scraper
  • stain blocking primer
  • epoxy filler
  • medium grit sanding block
  • spackle knife
  • exterior caulk
  • caulk gun
  • plastic sheeting
Steps:
  1. Pressure-wash the walls to remove any dirt or dust build up to ensure the smoothest coat application
  2. Asses and repair all damaged areas. Fill holes and cracks with epoxy using a spackle knife. Sand smooth once dry.
  3. Remove any loose or chipped paint using a paint-scraper
  4. Fill any gaps with caulk on the exterior (near trims or where two materials meet)
  5. Examine the exterior for any stains or wood knots. Apply a stain blocking primer to these areas.
  6. Cover windows, doors, and lights with plastic bags
  7. Use a paint sprayer and spray from top down. Overlap each line about 8 inches to ensure best coverage.
  8. Paint the trims and doors with two coats of semi-gloss paint.
