Oil on Canvas, 52 3/4" x 54 3/4"
Special Remarks: Established in 1907, the fine art conservation
department at Lowy has a long history of preserving historic and artistic works
of art. The painting and paper conservation studios treat works of art from all
periods from old masters to contemporary works.
Artist's regularly treated include French Impressionists such as Renoir,
Monet and Degas; American Painters and Illustrators such as Sargent, Chase,
Rockwell and Parrish; Nineteenth Century American Landscape painters including
Church, Cole and Bierstadt; and Twentieth Century masters such as O'Keefe, De
Kooning and Rothko.
The painting came to Lowy lined with glue onto linen, with multiple gouges,
creases, and surface distortions. There was a thick layer of old, hard,
discolored natural resin varnish and hard oil overpaint covering tears and
losses, with heavy layers of surface and embedded dirt. To treat, we first
faced the painting to protect the media layers, stripped the old glue lining,
treated with humidity and re-lined with Beva onto a new linen canvas. We then
cleaned off the dirt layers, discolored natural resin varnish and oil
restoration, and inpainted using reversible materials.
