A carved frame with mirrorplate in grotesque-style, made of walnut and partially decorated with goldleaf.
This carved frame is made in the early Renaissance style, the so called Grotesque-style which originally came from Italy. This style is characterized by the combination of strapwork, scrollwork, festoons, mascarons and putti. The frame should look like a piece of leather. Therefor the wood is bowed a little. Both Cornelis Floris in Flanders as Hans Vredeman de Vries in the Republic made a lot of designs in this Grotesque-style. It is the earliest Renaissance form introduced in the Netherlands. This type of frame is very rare.
