Flamecoating/ Fire Resistant Fabrics

Understanding FR (Fire Rating) requirements is essential to our practice as emerging  interior designers. Most notably, as we enter our future careers, we must be aware of legality issues we might encounter. While specifying fabrics and applications, it is vital to understand that we are accountable for the product and its performance.....
  • In many environments today, fire retardancy and flame resistance (FR) qualities are required for fabrics; in other cases, it is a desirable quality, at the least. For commercial and hospitality applications—for example, an awning used on an office building or an exhibit hall banner—FR ratings are essential. Fortunately, end product manufacturers (EPMs) have access to an increasing variety of textiles and finishing treatments to ensure that the application will be flame resistant. - Specialty Fabrics Review

Decoding:
  • Fire Resistant - Fire resistant refers to a fabric or fiber that has been treated to discourage the spreading of flames.
  • Fireproof - Fireproof means that a fabric literally will not burn. To be labeled fireproof, the Federal Trade Commission requires that a fabric must be 100% fireproof. If the fiber or fabric has been treated to prevent flames from spreading, it must be labeled as fire resistant.
  • Flameproof - Flameproof is a synonym for fireproof.
  • Flame Retardant Fabric - A fabric that resists or retards the spreading of flames. A flame retardant fabric can be made by using fibers that are themselves flame retardant (inherently flame retardant) or by using special finishes on fabrics

  • Domestic Upholstered Furniture - Regulation Reference
    • The statutory instrument embraces all domestic upholstered seating furniture (as well as children's furniture). This includes music stools, foot stools and pouffes, bean bags and floor cushions sold for use in domestic dwellings. For the purposes of this discussion, cover fabric will refer to the permanent cover of upholstered furniture.
    • Removable covers which are supplied with the furniture are regarded as permanent covers by the statutory instrument. Replacement covers supplied by the original furniture manufacturer are also deemed to be permanent. However, removable covers supplied by producers other than the furniture manufacturer are classed as loose covers.
    • Any fabric which is supplied as a permanent cover on furniture must:
    • comply with the cigarette test (BS5852:Part 1:1979:Source 0), there are no exceptions
    • either pass the appropriate match test; the one used depends on whether the material is a visible or non-visible part of a cover
    • or if the fabric is classified as "exempt" (i.e. composed of at least 75% by weight of cotton, modal, flax, silk, viscose or wool used either separately or together and not coated with any polyurethane preparation) then it need not comply with the match test providing the furniture contains a fire-resistant interliner (complying with schedule 3 of the statutory instrument)
    • Cover fabric which has been treated with a flame retardant chemical must undergo a cleansing procedure described in BS5651:1978:Clause 4 (30 minute water soak) prior to cigarette or match testing. The match test is conducted over "standard foam" as described in the statutory instrument. Most cigarette testing is in practice conducted over standard foam as well (the so called "worst case scenario") although for the purposes of the statutory instrument it can be carried out over the actual filling composite used in the finished furniture or indeed any legal filling material (the type of filling used will be stated on the certificate issued by the laboratory conducting the test).
    • "Non-visible" cover fabric which has been flame retarded may undergo a modified cigarette and match test in which the cleansing procedure is omitted and the match test is conducted over combustion modified foam. Non-visible cover fabric is defined as
    •  any part of the cover or furniture on which a back, arm or seat cover rests
    • the underside or reverse side of a seat or back cushion which has not been designed as reversible
    • the underside of non-reversible arm cushions provided they are secured and cannot be displaced in normal use
    • the dust cover on the underside of the furniture
    • Loose covers should be match resistant when tested over standard foam.
    • Stretch covers should be match compliant when tested over combustion modified foam.
    • The regulations do not apply to pillow cases or loose covers for mattresses and bed-bases.
    • Removable braids and trimmings, lightweight scrims (used over foams & fillings) and springs and not required to comply with the fire resistance requirements.
    • Cane furniture upholstery (seat & back cushions) supplied with the furniture must meet the requirements described for permanent covers. These cushions cannot be considered as scatter cushions (which have different requirements).
    • Garden furniture which is also suitable for indoor use (including conservatories) must comply with the permanent cover requirements.
    • Products for use as nursery furniture which are upholstered or upholstered items which are designed to hold a baby or small child must comply with the regulations as described for permanent covers. Nursery items include the following
    • baby seats/bouncing cradles/baby rockers
    • baby car seats designed for home as well as car use
    • baby walking frames
    • cots/travel cots
    • carry-cots
    • carry-cribs/baby cribs/moses baskets
    • highchairs
    • chair harnesses
    • playpens (including playpen mattresses)
    • prams
    • push-chairs
    • upholstered liners supplied with any of the above items.
    • Baby nests are exempt from the match resistance test. They must comply with the cigarette test and meet the requirements described in the statutory instrument for filling materials.
    Common Treatment Method:

    Backcoating:
    • Process used for upholstery fabric, lightweight flat woven cottons

    Wallpaper Anatomy

    Types of Wallpaper
Printed wallpaper is the general category of manufactured wallpaper with printed patterns.
Vinyl-coated wallpaper is the most common type of wallpaper, made of paper but with a protective coat of vinyl that makes it ideal (and scrubbable) for kitchens, bathrooms, etc. It is usually strippable, which makes it easy to pull off a wall and re-paper with a new pattern.
Relief wallpaper has a raised texture that you can feel.
Solid vinyl wallpaper is the most durable, waterproof and is ideal for very humid areas.
Flocked wallpaper, usually ornate and considered "old fashioned," includes a raised felt pattern that contrasts with the background color.

    Non-Traditional Types
Unbacked fabric is one of the most difficult styles because you have to work carefully to smooth out the fabric as you apply it to the wall.
Foil (brand name: "Mylar") is difficult to work with because it shows imperfections in the wall surface and because it can get wrinkled easily. It has silver and reflective surfaces.
Cork-faced wall coverings are thicker because they have a surface of cork.

    Types of Backing
Paper Backing: Used for paper backed vinyls and vinyl coated papers.
Woven Fabric Backing: Used for scrim, osnaburg, or drill cloth

Scrim: used mostly in light construction

Osnaburg: is used in medium to heavy usage areas

Drill cloth: used with the heaviest wallcoverings

Non-Woven Fabric Backings: Non woven wallcovering substrates (base material) are produced on a paper machine from a mixture of long fiber cellulose pulps and textile fibers. Special additives are used to provide wet strength and absorbency. Non wovens provide a substrate that is dimensionally stable when wet, which allows it to be pasted to the wall.
Latex Acrylic Backing: Used on fabric wallcoverings to allow for stability and improved hanging qualities.

    Types of Wallpaper (Detailed)
Coated fabric:  Fabric substrate coated with liquid vinyl or acrylic. The decorative layer is printed on this coating. This is generally considered more "breathable" wallpaper which makes it best for use in low moisture rooms.

Paper backed vinyl/solid sheet vinyl:  Paper (pulp) substrate laminated to a solid decorative surface. This type of wallpaper is very durable since the decorative surface is a solid sheet of vinyl. It is classified as scrubbable and peelable. Solid sheet vinyl can be used in most areas of the home since it resists moisture and is stain and grease resistant.

In-register paper-backed vinyl:  Solid vinyl layer of material is laminated or bonded to a paper backing sheet. These wallcoverings have a heat-embossed (raised) effect to register (fit) the pattern design, and provide a multitude of textural effects.  These wallcoverings have a high quality appearance and are durable because the decorative surface is solid vinyl.  They resist moisture, stains, and grease.

Fabric backed vinyl:  Substrate laminated to a solid vinyl decorative surface. General categories of this type of wallpaper include:
           a. Solid vinyl - this wallpaper consists of a vinyl film laminated to a fabric or paper substrate. It is generally considered the most durable wallcovering because the vinyl is a solid sheet and not applied in a liquid form. This type of wallpaper is ideal for consumers looking for a great degree of washability, scrubbability and durability.
           b. Paper - this type of wallpaper refers to wallpaper with a paper substrate/ground combination upon which the decorative layer is printed. True papers are not coated, but some may have a coating applied to seal in the inks. Because this type of wallpaper varies widely, check the label for attributes of the pattern/brand you want to purchase.

String effect:  Wallcoverings that have very fine vertical threads laminated to a paper type substrate. Threads may be of a man made material or natural fiber such as silk or linen.

    About Sustainable Textiles

Despite the trend factor being green is these days, there is no denying the fact that sustainability is the future of textile production. Organic production and green materials are on the rise in the design world. Many showrooms, like Pollack, are working towards earning LEED accreditation for some of their patterns. What does this mean, though? What is LEED and how are "organic" textiles different than non-organic?

Surprisingly, one of the most environmentally detrimental aspects of textile production is the processes of shipping materials and generating ideas. Concepts for patterns do not just happen and in a month's time woven into yards of fabric. They take years of mailing colorways, weaving methods, printing processes, and samples. This is not to mention that once a pattern is finalized, the cost of production and shipping to designer's offices and then onto upholstery houses and on down the design line adds up quickly. Aside from transportation and it's environmental impact, the processes of dying fabrics is having a negative impact as well. Synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, rayon, acrylic, and carbon fibers are costly to produce and do not biodegrade well.

There are three pillars that must remain in balance on the road towards sustainability: people, profit, and planet. It would appear that profit has been the culprit of the unbalanced system of production, with people following in step, and the planet in last place. What companies are working towards today is to equal out these three elements of textile production. Below are some steps the industry is taking to balance the pillars.

    • Cultivating cotton organically (minimal pesticide use)
    • Recycling cotton and polyester
    • Incorporating Bamboo fibers within the textile
    • Incorporating organic wool and silk, corn and soy bean fibers, and hemp
    • Reducing the use of wet processing (dying method)
    • Bio Processing (adding a materials natural living organisms to process
    • Creating textiles and wallcoverings that do not require backings or special aftercare treatments
    • Europe has one of the strongest environmental protection program set up in the world, although it is expensive to ship to and from, the textiles produced there are heavily monitored for green design.
    • Designing using the Cradle - to - Cradle guidelines

Another method - and one that is both good for the environment and local economy - is to outsource local artisans and materials. What materials can be found here in New York State and the country as a whole?

Below are links to government sites regarding organic outlines and strong green design textile lines:

    http://www.usgbc.org/

Here you will find information on what it takes to get LEED certified. In 2004, the LEED CI certification was established for commercial interiors.

    http://www.contracttextiles.org/

bluesign is a green production monitor that begins before the production on the textile begins.  They essentially walk alongside the production line keeping a close eye on how things are being done and stepping in when methods turn environmentally dangerous.
Textiles with the made in Green symbol are free from harmful pesticides and materials. The method of production was environmentally safe and the workers who labored over the textiles were treated fairly.

    Textile Durability Tests/Information

    Amelia Stein

    - The Wyzenbeek and Martindale tests are the two methods commonly used to  predict a textile's wear-ability

    - Wyzenbeek involves rubbing along the warp and weft of a fabric
A Wyzenbeek machine is used for this test allowing sample of the test fabric to be pulled tight in a frame and held stationary. Individual test specimens cut from the warp and weft direction are then rubbed back and forth using an approved fabric as the abradant. The number of double rub cycles achieved before two yarn breaks occur or noticeable wear is observed is recorded as the fabric’s abrasion rating.
    - Martindale is a figure-8 rub test
This is an oscillating test. Fabric samples are mounted flat and rubbed in a figure eight like motion using a piece of worsted wool cloth as the abradant. The number of cycles that the fabric can endure before fabric shows objectionable change in appearance (yarn breaks, piling, holes) is counted. Number of cycles determines abrasion rating.

    - Performance is determined by the fiber content, weave, finish, furniture design, maintenance, cleaning, and usage

    - Durability of an upholstery fabric is a complex interaction (combination) of performance tests that, in addition to abrasion, includes seam slippage, piling, tensile strength, and usage

for heavy duty usage you should specify:
    30,000 double rubs Wyzenbeek method
    or
    40,000 cycles Martindale method

The following uses are appropriate for 30,000 double rubs:
single shift corporate, hotel rooms/suites, conference rooms, and dining area usage.

extreme wear situations may require higher levels of abrasion resistance.
End use examples that may require higher than 30,000 double rubs include: 24 hours transportation terminals, 24 hour telemarketing, 24 hour healthcare emergency rooms, 24 hour casino gambling areas, and such public gathering places as theatres, stadiums, lecture halls and fast food restaurants.

**double rubs exceeding 100,000 do not provide additional value in use
